First it was personal computers, then smartphones. What is the next platform to transform into a public computing platform?
the cars. Cars will be the next computing platform. (Well, an upcoming 'one' computing platform).

The general trend towards developing robotic cars (or self-driving cars as they are known in the media) is one of the main factors that will lead to this happening. Building a computer system that can "completely" replace a human driver requires enormous processing capabilities, which means that the number of computing units used in cars will double. I remember reading a while ago that the average number of processors in a modern car - nowadays - is 200, despite the fact that the jobs that cars currently perform are primitive compared to what a car running in the fifth automation level is supposed to do. 

The best description I've read of those cars is going to be "Supercomputer on Wheels", or "supercomputer on wheels". As is the case with smart phones, the transformation of cars from a "single-function tool" into a "general computing platform" will happen gradually. It would not be at all surprising if every app store manufacturer provided the cars that they produce.

The kind of apps that will run on this platform is really hard to imagine; Not only for the huge difference in computing capabilities - which would allow impossible tasks to be performed on traditional platforms (personal computers and smartphones) - but also because the assortment of sensors used by robotic cars is much richer and more accurate than anything used in consumer electronics.

Applications of artificial intelligence, virtual reality, augmented reality, and even "car games" (similar to PC and smartphone games) ... nothing is excluded.
